Van Michael was born and raised in Hawaii on the island of Lana’i, then moved to Maui throughout middle school and high school. He grew up in a Christian home but did not truly get saved until college around 19 years old, through hearing powerful expository preaching in a small local church on Oahu and gospel-centered teaching on video from a theologian named R.C. Sproul.
Van Michael moved to the mainland to finish college and then graduated with a Master of Divinity from Southern Seminary in Louisville, KY. He’s married to Delaney and they have two kids, Eliza and Ezra. He loves spending time with his family, watching and playing sports, reading dense theological books (see the Recommended Resources page for some of these), and really good coffee and food. He’s been the staff elder and primary teaching pastor at Kihei Baptist since September 2021.
